Last Day was the Best Day !!

This was yhe best day hunting this year if not ever. Please read. I got up late since my son has been sick (just to be sure he was ok) Got started at 830 AM heading up the edge of the woods I kick up a doe and 2 yearlings --flags waving goodbye! Figure this is par for this year. Head on back to my favorite spot only to notice someone has been their already and gone--TRESPASSER! Again par for this season. Figure I will sit there for 2-3 hours just in case....NOTHING! Par for the year---Figure I will move to the opposite side of the field where the season got off to a good start. I climb into my lock on and enjoy the rolling hills and farms looking north towards York some 20 miles off but way out of sight. An hour goes by and it sounds like WWII par for the year. Someone playing with a semi auto---I counted over 400 shots. Then a smokpole to my left and one about a half mile behind me. Darn sounds like the 4th of July! I opt to stay in the mature hard woods and watch the squirrels. jays, woodpeckers, and blue birds that are still blue. In comes a deer bounding all over the place from behind me where I heard the shots. I lift Elisabeth and draw a steady aim thinking "AIM SMALLER and MISS SMALL" 40 yards out and closing ---wait ---steady---35---wait-----20-----15 yards and she stops and lays down right in front of my stand. Dont pull the trigger, there might be a buck or bigger deer following. The sun is setting on my left and for 20 minutes she lays there curled up like my labs would do when they slept. She had almost a black coat the darkest Ive ever seen on a deer. Her head pops up and she stares at the sunset as if looking for other deer so I wait. Its getting late and Im figuring no more deer when BOOM!!! My buddy shoots from the other side of the farm---he missed sending them right to me. Now what the heck do I do---they are behind me walking towards the woods and into the sunset. I choose not to shoot and take aim again at the doe under me who has not moved whith all this shooting going on. I place the silver blade right on her side as she lifts her head again to look towards the most beautiful sunset Ive ever seen. My finger slides onto the trigger and I whisper BOOM! I slowly put my GB frizzen cover back on. I hope she has twins and I get to see her next year. Ive never enjoyed a more beautiful sunset as I did with that beautiful deer tonight. I did not put meat in the freezer this year but I sure had a great 1 and even better last day. One does not need to always pull the trigger to be successful when hunting and for the entire season I think I forgot that and that deer tonight was sent to remind me of that simple fact! I also added a friend to the traditional way of hunting and he scored twice. Hope he never picks up anything but the bow and flinter again. Thanks if you read this to the end.

You are exactly right Bunky. I did not get anything either this season and still had one of the best seasons ever.

Re: Last Day was the Best Day !!

That is a nice story. I do that all of the time while hunting deer. In fact, I have been going out in ML season this year with no weapon!
There is so much more to hunting than the kill.

Re: Last Day was the Best Day !!

I missed a doe on the last drive tonight------It was a yearling doe that I would normally pass on but her front leg was swinging in the breeze and she was having trouble getting along so I figured I would try to take her BUT I missed her at 40yrds. I still had a great season!!!

Bunky, that was Classy, I wish more would think the way you do.

Thats what muzzleloading is all about, Its the experience not the kill.

For those who fought for it, Life has a flavor the protected will never know.
