well....mauser made smoke....

well, finally after the deer giving us a run around each and every day, and me not getting a shot ALL season, last drive of the day, i had a bunch run right up to me...6-10 deer in the group...

i was rested on a nice fence post...seen them coming a ways and got the hammer back..they froze about 15-20yds away and i squeezed the hair trigger back...i was lined up on a nice sized doe..she was quartering me a bit so i put it on the near shoulder...

touched the trigger....POOF...

deer all bolted...

my buddy was 100yds away watching it all unfold...he said he was just about to start walkin to get the truck so it would be there by the time i got it gutted and drug to the farmer road...

nope...flash in the pan...no boom! i was in such shock i never moved a hair..i was waiting for the deer to drop! lol...

they bolted at the flash and were long gone...

thats huntin!! i wanted to make smoke this season...i got my wish!! just a lil poof was all i got to make though! lol..

buddy got on the radio and asked why i didnt shoot...after this season, all i could do was laugh and tell him i did...

twas a good rock lock season...we seen lots of deer...killed 2 does and 2 8pts..im gunna say by the time everyone else got done missing and killing theirs and it was my turn to sit, they were just a heck of alot smarter...i got to sit all this week and they were just always a step ahead of the dogs and shooters..

got back to the farm, ran a water bottle to the fence post 25yds away like always...rested the gun...KAPOW! dead water bottle.....that just made me laugh a little more...

ive never had a flash in the pan before...im still scratchin my head...i checked the pan while it was on that fence post and it was perfect..wasnt moved from there so it didnt get shifted around or spilled out somehow...it lit and did its job...though i THOUGHT the flash seemed to burn slow and wasnt big, but i could be wrong...all the powder i ever put was in the pan, and it was dry as a bone so i cant explain it....

"so cold my flash pan burnt slow......"

still got a bit longer here in 2B...but i think were done except maybe saturdays or if my buddy gets bored...im not real concerned about getting more..it would be nice...but its been a long season...we all need a few days off atleast..

Re: well....mauser made smoke....

You haven't hunted long enough if you haven't had a flash in the pan. LOL

Had one the other year, after a damp day in the woods, I had to take the touch hole out and get it to fire off that way. Thought I was gonna need a torch.

Re: well....mauser made smoke....

Sounds like me about 15 years ago in WVa. had a drive on, seen the deer coming, trigger set, leaning on fence post, big doe was on other side of fence, stopped, broadside, 10feet or less then poof, flash pan went off and that was it. We never laughed so hard.

Re: well....mauser made smoke....

lol...i knew ya'll would understand!

my buddies arent real flintlockers IMO...most dont know much other than how to shoot one...dont know much of anything...either do a whole lot of missing or misfires...but i STILL caught crap from the ONE time i had a misfire!

i still cant believe it happened...but, thats the fun of huntin with a rocklock...i could believe it happened if i had a wet charge, or forgot to charge...but she went off like a champ back at the farm...not even a delay...so it'll remain a mystery...pan was charged proper..was checked 5 minutes prior to getting the shot and it was on a flat level fence post...i cant explain it...

GWH, thanks! i'll be back out...not near as hard..if i didnt have deer in the freezer already id be tryin hard...but its cold...were all beat..ive been goin at it since a few days after i got back in Oct day AND night..but, i love it...got the time to do it...i lied..i wont let up too much lol...id like to do some still hunting or tracking...thats just the best feeling ever out there in the snow, camoed up, sneakin around with a rocklock...ive just yet to be successful...but havent put a ton of time into it..

im still laughing...most guys would wrapped their gun around a tree after the time ive put in for that ONE shot...not me..thats huntin! if it upset me or got me down, i wouldnt do it...i can say even if it were a big ole buck, id still laugh...any ya'll can understand..theres just nothin else to do..if you get upset you might as well quit coz thats huntin with a flinter...
