Round ball question

Kind of a newby question here....This morning I wanted to try shooting patch and round ball for the first time out of my Traditions DeerHunter .50cal. I purchased the Hornady .490 RB and prelubed TC .018 patches. Starting with a clean barrel, I tried to load the combo into the gun and it seemed way too tight...I pressed on the ball enough to leave an impression in it with the ball starter and could only get 1/2 the ball into the barrel before I stopped, being unsure as to how tight it should be and not wanting to push it to a point where it was unretrievable. With my only other point of reference being the powerbelts that slide in with a little resistance, how tight should the P&RB be going in?

Re: Round ball question

I would try using .010 patches with .490 RB. This is what I use. It adds up to .50. Some say to use .015 patches for a better shot I have never tried that.

If its outdoors I'm willing to give it a try.

Re: Round ball question

Find someone to shoot with that has experience. It will cut learning time by 3/4.

Re: Round ball question

Your load combo is not to tight. I shoot a .495 ball and 18th pillow ticking in my 50.

Re: Round ball question

Technically, a .010 patch and .490 ball adds up to .510, the patch thickness is on both sides of the ball and must be added twice.

Re: Round ball question

its a circle there are no sides. it is a .490 diameter sphere so a .010 patch on all sides still adds to .50

If its outdoors I'm willing to give it a try.

Re: Round ball question

I have been shooting a .490 RB with .015 prelubed patch for years with no problems.
