need help measuring a barrel

i have a dixie barrel i dont know the caliber 50 or 54 . the barrel is stamped dixie gun works, then serial #, i started building this hawkens in the late 80's never finished it . any barrel measuring tricks?

Use a micrometer and take an ID measurement at the muzzle.

Yes, it is a half inch and you measure the lands,

In the US caliber is the diameter of the bullet, so your measurement is across the grooves.

On metric bullets the dimension is across the lands.

Stand up and be counted, join an outdoor sports organization

When a ML barrel is made it is drilled and reamed to the bore dia. Than the ferrules (grooves)
are cut. You measure across the lands.
