Big Smokey back in service

Finally got time to tinker with "Big Smokey", my .54 cal TVM Early Lancaster. Was having problems with it grouping all the sudden last year. Did not use it to hunt last January since I lost confidence in it. (my .50 cal Bedford filled in nicely making meat)

Experimented today to figure out the problem and tried changing out a couple things. Seems a Hornady .535 ball, pillow ticking with Lehigh Valley Lube instead of my normal .530 ball, bore butter prelubed .020 patches (used for 20 yrs) did the trick. Shoots tight again at 50 yds and gives me 3 inch groups a couple inches low at 100 yds. Both targets point of aim is bottom of the orange. shot the 45 cal Bedford today too. Both dialed in for the seasons. I use the .45 for Oct season and .54 for late flintlock season.

Had the .45 cal Bedford out this morning. Offhand practice. Keeping them all in the black just under 3 inches at 50 yds. It's my Early Season rifle. The .54 Lancaster I like to use for late season when I can see a bit further and want a little more oomph at longer range. Looking forward to getting it back in the woods again. Has never let me down when I pulled the trigger

If I hunted bear, I would be carrying the .54 in Oct. It's a thumper
