I have been to Dixon's probably near a hundred times, but never made it to the Gunmaker's fair. (July 26 to 28 this year) Finally cleared things off the Calendar to make a day at the fair (Friday the 26th) I am past the kid in a candy store stage and will be looking for some specific items that might be hard to find even at Dixon's. a 3 inch think stock blank for one. ( got a 2.25 inch barrel with a 1 bore) Will need some furniture for the build too.
I'll be picking up some wood for one build and a lock, possibly a barrel (if I don't decide to order online) for another build. Finally started the .36 cal build last night, still need some inlays for it. Then of course my normal stuff I pick up and anything else that catches my eye. Will be there the 26th and 27th. I always stay at a campground down the road Thurs-Sun
You are in for a treat! There are so many vendors that are willing to speak with you at any level relative to your interest in ML that it is mind boggling.
I have not been to the Gun Makers Fair in probably 2 years but I did go there for ML supplies last summer and I bumped into Chuck Dixon in the lower parking area. A fine gentleman by any standard and a pleasure to speak with. Chuck must have spent over an hour speaking with my son and I and I treasure that conversation as having been honest, thought provoking and enlightening; just to name a few.
A Classy guy who has a lot of history in his heart and soul. Long may he wave.
Thanks for the reminder! I've only made it once, a few years back, but what a neat show to visit. I'm gonna do my best to make it again this year, as I have a few supplies I could use.
Gonna possibly be away on vacation this year, but I have made it there the last several years. We'll see if I can make it again.
For those who don't make it, you are indeed missing out, but all is not lost. There's a great show in Lewisburg in early February (18th Century Artisan Show).
But make it to Dixon's if you can. It's well worth it.
Elaine and I are planning on a "Dixons run" for the fair. Hope to meet some of the guys on the forum in person......I will be the Old Man drooling in the gunmakers tent.......See you there!
A great fair to visit. Unfortunately, will not be able to make it this year. The last Dixon's Gunmaker's Fair I visited I met Gunmaker Brad Emig(below) which ended up putting me back a few shillings!! I see Brad & Shane are scheduled to be there as always. A memorable visit indeed!! :smile2:
I will be running down quick on Friday morning to drop off a powderhorn to be judged......maybe take a quick spin around and then I have to get back to work. Somehow I didn't leave myself enough vacation days to take the full day off this year. UGH.
Coming back down on Saturday and then again on Sunday though to pick up my horn and critique sheet.
Man I hope this heat wave gets through this weekend and gives us a break the following! I've been down there when its been 90 degrees and those tents can get a little soupy! LOL
The nice thing is that the ALR tent and other things are fairly well shaded, so at least you're not getting cooked in the sun. The main tent in the lot below the shop might get a bit toasty inside, though. Just means we'll sweat more on the guns and help along the aging process!
I'm glad the fair isn't this weekend ... It's a tad on the warm side .. mid 90's and very humid .
The forecast for next weekend is lower 80s' .. may need a sweatshirt !!
Another great year at Dixon's gunmakers fair. Picked up some needed and not so needed items as usual. Also sat in on some seminars and picked up great info I plan on using on my current build. Now to wait for the Artisan Fair in February
Had another great fair! Spent more money than I wanted (10 years running ) Picked up a couple beautiful southern banded powderhorns for future reference material from a couple great makers. Daniel Boling and Billy Griner. Added a new reference horn book, a couple more blank horns for future projects, flints of course, a new leather cow's knee, and a couple powderhorn straps from Kris Polizzi. Met a bunch of new people this year and made some new friends.....hit a couple seminars, and picked a lot of brains for future projects as well!
Spent some time at Allen Martin's table as usual..... he is the man, LOL, and he is also going to re-do the sights on my .58 for me because I seem to be turning into more bat than human. UGH. :nerd:
Always time well spent. (Well for me anyway :grin2: Can't speak for Allen)
Oh and I brought home a little Bling with the powderhorn I entered! :victorious:
