Uh-oh, what did I do???

I spent a half hour talking to Allen Martin today at Dixon's fair. I looked at a lot of rifles of his. Talked with him about what I'm interested in.

My checkbook is cowering in the corner in fear........

Re: Uh-oh, what did I do???

I wanted a custom flintlock all my life. I finally have enough money to be able to afford one. So I ordered mine in January. I am hoping to have it real soon.

Don't quiver. Either you can afford it, or you can not. It is that simple. If you can afford it, and you want it, then buy it. If not then just forget about it. Other rifles will do as well for your hunting. They are just not that special rifle.

It is actually pretty simple. Either you can or can't afford it. Tom.

I can afford it. It will just take some budgeting and willingness to forego other things I might want to buy in the meantime. He's got a 3 year backlog, so there's time, anyway.

I looked at other rifles from other makers, but his were the nicest to my hands, and he was really willing to talk to a customer. He truly enjoyed talking with folks, not just selling to them. It's easy to see this is a passion of his.

When one holds a 58 caliber rifle that feels like a feather, it's not heard to get excited!

This is what I really took to....and what I think I'll own at some point-

John Schreit rifle

Re: Uh-oh, what did I do???

By your reply you made a decision for me. I would not wait three years for a custom rifle. There are just too many variables that could pop up in three years.

I understand that backlog. But I would not wait that long. Heck you could both be gone in three years. Or an injury, or anything. That is way too long for me. Tom.

To each his own. That's what's great about having choices. If you want another builder to talk to, I did pick up another guy's card. Central PA, 6-month wait, good work, about 2/3's the cost of Martin's work.

Re: Uh-oh, what did I do???

I spoke with him for a while today as well. I got so involved with speaking to him that I forgot to ask him if he is related to Hacker Martin. He had some nice rifles there and was a fine guy to speak with.

Good night Chesty, wherever you are......

Re: Uh-oh, what did I do???

Best wishes with your new rifle! I'm sure it will be a real beauty!

If I remember correctly, the original was on display at the Berks Co. Historical Society, last winter.

Re: Uh-oh, what did I do???

Yeah, I missed out on the long rifle displays that were there a while ago. Sure wish I'd developed my interest in them earlier!

The Schreit rifle he built and had with him at the fair just felt soooooo perfect to me. What a fantastic rifle....
