Your Thoughts??

<span style="color: #330033">I wrote to Outdoor Life and Field and Stream about the lack of tact in advertising they allow for a 'family magazine'. I personally have a problem putting those magazines in my childrens hands with Sexual Enhancement Adds and add for Viagra etc....Im not a prude but I certainly dont want to explain that stuff to a 5 and 8 year old. If you agree would you drop them a line saying so? Here is the response I got from these magazines:</span>

<span style='font-size: 11pt'><span style="color: #660000">
Thanks for sending your note and we can certainly appreciate your concern for some of the advertising that exists in the magazine.

The primary reason those ads are taken is the cost of the advertising in the magazine helps offset the cost of subscription for you, the reader. In order to keep costs affordable for the reader, magazine publishers rely on revenue from advertisers. This revenue helps us invest in the quality of the magazine’s content by employing the best writers and editors and providing you with the top notch photography and service that has been Field & Stream’s and Outdoor Life’s staple for over 110 years.

Additionally the magazine is written for an older, primarily male audience and this demographic of reader is appealing to the companies that target them. And it appears for some of the older readers of the magazine that these types of products are desirable since the companies continually advertise their products to our readers.

We do apologize for the offensive nature of some of the ads but hope that you can appreciate where we’re coming from a business perspective.

We do recommend simply ripping some of those pages out of the magazine like you have been doing if you plan on passing the magazine along to any younger members of your household.

Thank you for your support of Field & Stream and Outdoor Life and we look forward to continuing to service you with the highest quality editorial content available from any outdoor publication.

Best regards,

Christopher Jette

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$
95% of the pages in a mag. are ads anymore. MOST mags are a waste of money.

Re: Your Thoughts??

I gave up on Outdoor Life and Field & Stream about 15 years ago. Most of the stuff in the outdoor mags today is a rehash of what they wrote 20 years ago.

I read & subscribe to Muzzle Blasts, Muzzleloader, Fir, Fish & Gaame and the Pa Game News.

Re: Your Thoughts??

I agree with the above. Paying so much for 100 pages that have 4 paragraphs of useful information is a crime. I have seen out doors mags from the 1890's and 1920's. Actually far better than the current fare.

Along the same vein however, you can't watch Tv without seeing pantyliners, Mydol, tampax, cross your heart, Enzyte, Extenze, KY Intense, Viagra, Cialis, Depends, Vickie's secret, Trojans and some bizarre vacuum pump. The evening scandal mag shows, such as ET are full of what spoiled Hollywood celeb isn't wearing panties, flashed her boobs etc. The outdoor mags are mild by comparison. Early morn TV has such winners as informercials to buy Girls gone wild tapes, depicting female exhibitionists, lesbian acts, etc. Afternoon soaps, at least what I saw last Labor Day, is almost soft porn.

The mags are mild. I am far from being a prude but sometimes TV goes beyond common decency. I don't buy the mags because I am excercising my economic power to send a message that I will not buy such crap. I like Muzzle Blasts, Old West, Nat Geo, and precious few others.

Zimm I couldnt agree more-----Thats why I dont watch much more than maybe 1 hour of TV per week. My kids get the PUBLIC TV that we support. They would rather play outside or read.....I just dont understand why???? Mostly $$$$ I guess.

Re: Your Thoughts??

Your right, I gave up on most. The F&S and Outdoor Life appeals to the beginners, and I guess that means young and ^^^^^^.

The pharmaceutical ads are the least offensive to me. The large capacity magazines, AR type rifles and the holster ads are terrible, just a sleaze girl with next to nothing on. Again the spray and pray group is the youth, and those ads must work for the younger shooters or they wouldn't pay for them. I never buy the stuff that is advertised with cheap sex.

I fish saltwater and subscribe to "Florida Sportsmen" mag. Great mag for salt, but the covers, ads, and every fish held up photo is a scanty bikini (maybe that is redundant)!
