Just bought my first flintlock. Need help.

I just bought my first flintlock so that I can hunt the late flintlock season in PA next year. I bought a Traditions Deer Hunter .50 cal flintlock since it seemed like a decent beginner flintlock that was low in price. I have never shot a flintlock and don't know the first thing about them. Does anybody have a book or any information to recommend that will be useful to get me started with this new gun? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

kl, I got the same one! They are amazing and I love mine. You'll get lots of tips here, but Traditions also puts out a great video. Check it out

Re: Just bought my first flintlock. Need help.

There have been several threads about what equipment beginners need and the crap the salesmen will sell that isn't necessary. There are a few reputable places on line with beginner guides. Start with the NMLRA. They actually have a downloadable poster on loading a muzzleloader.

I posted that link a few times before.

Books and Mags are out there a plenty. Used to be that a gun came with a fair illustrated instruction book for such thhings. I think TC manuals are available on line, and although the parts and description isn't the same, loading procedure and cleaning is the same.

A number of years ago, NMLRA offered a booklet by Don Davis entitled, MUZZLELOADING....To Begin With. It is worth ordering, if it is still available.

Good luck with your new venture with a flintlock. You'll never look back!

Give Traditions a call. They would more than glad send you a manual for your rifle.Or if you go on their site, you can download it yourself.I guess you bought it used since you didn,t get a manual.Be careful with your front site, they have been known to come loose. If it comes loose it,s an easy fix.Good luck and welcome to the brotherhood of muzzleloading.

Yes the best advice you have already got. Get a little education by reading how. Also look around your neighborhood to see if a friend or neighbor is already into flintlock hunting and pick their brain. It seems you are in western PA so too far for me. Even if you don't know anyone check at the local gun shop for the name of someone or a possible club in your area. It is kind of like when you buy a new car or truck and think you are the only one but suddenly see them all over the place. Good luck and read up. Local Libraries may have books on the old guns too.

"The Complete Blackpowder Handbook", by Sam Fadala is a great book for starters.
