Thought On Flintlock Season

It is not so much for it's beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts,as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.R.L.S.

Re: Thought On Flintlock Season

That is such a great quote of Stevenson's, and it certainly captures the winter woods during flintlock season.

I sat, backed up against a knarly old chestnut oak this past week, and enjoyed the woodsy loam smell of the earth beneath the leaves I kicked back. With the smells came the winter woods sounds of downy woodpeckers and chickadees working their way through the overhead limbs. The only odor I missed was that "sweet" smell of fired black powder. Maybe this week.

Great quote. I will be thinking of it when I am out hunting on Friday.
