Favorite Flint?

What is your favorite flint? I like TC Premium Agates. Not the TC standard flint. Does anyone think there are better flints?
Probably for example English or French amber, etc.

Specifically for TC flintlocks.

I have found a way to improve TC spark/lock time. Get the thinnest leather possible for a main wrap. Put a thicker piece of leather between the bottom jaw and the bottom of the thin leather wrapped around the flint. Just a piece underneath, not wrapped around .... this raises the flint so you can strike a lot more than just half the frizzen.

Years ago I tried the suggestion of using a flattened lead ball instead of leather. I found that I broke flints very easily with this method.

Re: Favorite Flint?

I did use the harder flints however the place I bought my TC at 35 years ago (a black powder shop no longer in buissness) said they were to hard for the frizzens and I had to go back to the TC flints.

Re: Favorite Flint?

Black English flints. Easily re=sharpened by knapping. You can't knap an agate flint. On TC locks, it's not that English flints are too hard, but TC frizzens (older ones anyway) are too soft. When I had a TC flinter, it improved a lot when I had the frizzen re-hardened.

Re: Favorite Flint?

My updated TC lock and my L&R both spark extremely well with German agates.

I have black English and French Amber as well as TC agates and the higher grade TC agates..

Re: Favorite Flint?

I think that extra sliver of leather would help for sure on the earlier locks for sure.
