Re: Day 9 Flintlock Season

Not going out today. Had 3 close calls yesterday but 1 wouldn't stop running, 1 was in brush that was too thick for a good shot, and the last 1 was in a cut cornfield about 50-60 yards out and with 20 mph winds at that time I just couldn't make the shot. I'll be out tomorrow afternoon, Thurs afternoon, Fri afternoon, and all day Saturday. Good Luck and stay warm!

Re: Day 9 Flintlock Season

Does it seem like evenings are better for natural deer movement than mornings during shooting light to everyone.Seems in my experience it is.Other than maybe late morning or afternoon during cold weather when deer may get up to feed this has been my experience.Seems morning hunts are almost not worth it at most times unless there is pressure moving some deer around.

I have hunted a company preserve, 16,000 acres, in SC for many years. Its hunted from Sept to Dec 31. A very, very large percentage of the deer are taken in the evenings.

Re: Day 9 Flintlock Season

I was only out for about hour and half this morning. It was -5 degrees when I left the truck and it was so noisy I am sure every deer with a half mile of me knew I was on the move. I watched a good crossing area until almost 9:00 am but didn’t see anything.

I did find a good spot to put a blind up for the afternoon and maybe the rest of the week. It is a good natural crossing area with a lot of sign but also pretty think with buckthorn. The question will be whether the deer go through there before or after dark.

Heading back out there in about a half hour.

Re: Day 9 Flintlock Season

Well saw a bunch of deer tonight. Took about a 25 yrd shot on a doe and after about the 10th misfire the gun went off. When the smoke cleared i watch two doe including the one i shot at run off. The one i shot at kept its right from leg up in the air like she was hit. This is the opposite shoulder/leg i was shooting at. Just got back in and never found a drop of blood, im baffled. I tracked what i felt were her tracks off and on through the patches of snow
