Question on a hit

My brother called me tonight and told me that he "whiffed". However, he did find a patch of hair at the impact site. There was no blood or any other sign of a hit beyond the hair. The hair in question is about 2" long. He believes the deer in question was a 2-1/2 or 3-1/2 year old buck, based on the body and remaining antler.

The shot was about 100 yards with a PRB, which is a distance he's practiced and is proficient at. He said the shot felt good. At the shot, the deer hunched up and ran straight away with his tail between his legs. The deer paused after 50-60 yards, looked back, then ran another 50-60 yards and paused again. My brother lost sight of the deer for a minute after that as they traveled over a rise in the field. The whole group then ran into a woodlot about 500 yards away.

I'll be duck hunting nearby tomorrow morning, and feel that it's probably worth the time to follow up a little more. I'm hoping to glean a little more insight from you folks in the meantime.

Any thoughts that may help me in the morning?

Re: Question on a hit

Sure sounds like a hit, hope he didn't push it after it paused the first time.

Dont knock it till you've tried it

Re: Question on a hit

Definitely sounds hit....

I've tracked a few deer hit with the flinter with little to no blood...especially round balls...

I've tracked 2 very well hit deer right around 100yds. Had it not been for hair and me "knowing" i didn't miss theyd been easy to loose...one had snow and was a deep double lung shot..barely any blood at all. A few specs...ran UP HILL and piled up 150yds from the shot...broadside in about the last ribs. Both lungs hit. I was shocked...

I'd spend a lot of time looking...that buck sounds hit well...

That's not belly hair at all and foul weather coming tonight, if it hasn't hit ya already. I'd be out with a flashlight now, personally.

Re: Question on a hit

If you can't look tonight, get a gps and walk grids tomorrow. The GPS will help you make sure you are walking where you should and keeping your grid lines. That deer is very likely dead.

Re: Question on a hit

You better go look, you owe it to the animal....

Anybody can shoot deer on the farm ground....You earn it in the mountains.......

Re: Question on a hit

I agree. I don't like that it stopped twice, but that's not belly hair, and tail down usually does not indicate a minor scratch.

Re: Question on a hit

Sounds like most of you are thinking the same as I am.

The deer ran into the neighboring farm, and after contacting the landowner, he said he'd prefer we not go on his place since him and his family have been actively hunting there. He said he will look tomorrow, and he's honest enough that he'll look hard and let us know if he finds anything.

I guess we're kind of hamstrung at the moment. I'll retrace my brother's steps as far as I can go and make sure he didn't miss anything, and hopefully we'll hear from the neighbor.
