Minimum Powder Charge

What is the minimum powder charge you would use for hunting black bear with a Flint Lock Rifle, with shots being 30yds or less?

Current setup is shooting dead on. I think it's enough powder, but like to get some opinions from others.

Thanks

FFg Black Powder - GOEX

80 gr. 1,328 f.p.s./897 f.p.e. 1,039 f.p.s./552 f.p.e. 876 f.p.s./391 f.p.e.
90 gr. 1,386 f.p.s./1,058 f.p.e. 1,069 f.p.s./585 f.p.e. 892 f.p.s./407 f.p.e.

You might want to bump it up to get some more energy

Re: Minimum Powder Charge

That's interesting Thank You for that. I do notice thought there isn't a big difference until you start getting past 50. But, I guess more energy is always good if accuracy stays true.

Now that I looked at it again what I said isn't exactly accurate

Re: Minimum Powder Charge

Don't be surprised to see that 54 and roundball shoot more accurately with 100 grains. 90 and 100 seems to be the preferred powder load with the 54 and ball.

Also, I see you use two powders? Have you tried using FFF on both the pan and also down the barrel?

Re: Minimum Powder Charge

if your current load is loading well, shooting well and the recoil and flinch factor are good, I wouldn't change a thing. if I was to try anything at all, it would be 80 gr of 3f, which will give more fps and energy.

Re: Minimum Powder Charge

I shoot 80gr 2x Swiss with my 54 cal. Never shot a bear with it but tagged a deer at 100yds and he didn't go past 30yds and died. It was a double lung shot off hand with a prb witha long gun. I get similar groups with 90gr 2x goex. I prefer the Swiss. I don't use as much and it burns cleaner. It's a little more expensive and harder to find but worth it
