Jan. 3, 2015

Weather forecast called for mixed weather to move in around 9 A.M. Set up at 6:30 rain and sleet begins. Only planned on hunting til 9 anyways so decided to stick it our as long as possible. Along about 8 heard leaves rustling and two yearlings come running up thru the hollow as if the were feeling their spring oats. One offered a shot, but I am only after and adult doe or buck.

AT 8:30 mixed weather got heavier and I called it quits.

No shot taken, but still enjoyed a couple of hours in the woods.

Talk about dedicated. Sitting in this sleet stuff sounds worse than the first 2 Saturdays of rifle buck when it rained all day long. But, for some odd reason, I enjoyed it.

I had high hopes for today but the rain changed my plans. It hasn't let up here since around 7 am. Bummer!

I don't hunt turkeys because I want to, I hunt turkeys because I have to.

I took my son out for about 3 hours this morning. It was getting miserable by the time we left. We didn't see anything but squirrels.

Went out at 6:30 AM with high hopes and the weather turned into the 4 Plagues of Egypt. Sleet, Rain, Snow and Hail all at the same time then each one individually. Sat until 10;00 AM and then walked to warm up. Powder got wet, saw nothing and called it quits. Always wanted to kill a deer any deer on my Birthday maybe next year.

Saw the forecast and didn't bother. Extreme cold moving in next week.

I at least got out Wednesday Thursday and Friday.

Re: Jan. 3, 2015

Went to leave the house this morning. The freezing rain here had the roads turned into a skating rink! After almost not stopping on the first hill, we turned around and did some house work instead, installing some flooring. Oh well, here's hoping for next week!

A bad day hunting rabbits beats a good day of anything else!

Re: Jan. 3, 2015

Stayed out until 9:30, saw nothing. Thought they might be feeding heavier before the bad weather. More snow and very cold weather coming this week. One other truck in the parking lot, which was a 100% improvement over yesterday!

Thank God I'm an American, and not a democrat!

Re: Jan. 3, 2015

We had a great day of drives until steady rain at noon ended our day. Weather was a major challenge today. 1st drive I had a very nice buck 8pt + at 70 yards but he didn't give me a clear shot as he blasted down the laurel, just before my opening he turned hard 90 n ran straight away. It was tough to pass but I know I did the right thing. 2nd drive had a nice doe n two yearlings at 20 yards. Yearlings were standing broadside but I was after a buck or mature doe, mom stayed in the thicker laurel n had to let her go at a painful 15 yrds. Last drive kicked out two does to buddies but no one had a shot. Great day in the woods! All told 3 buck, at least 5 does seen....all on public ground. Was a nice change of pace even though no one scored today

I live to hunt....and hunt to live!

Re: Jan. 3, 2015

Just got in, was out all day w/ buddies doing drives. Started with snow around 9 am, then to sleet by 10ish, then to rain/freezing rain in the afternoon in Lower Northumberland and Schuylkill Co's. 'Cept for a lunch break, we stayed at it all day. A few were seen (not by me). Last drive in the rain was an ugly 2 mile or so walk!! Saw a flash of a coyote. Glad to be back, hitting the hot shower soon. Good day in the woods with some good old friends!
