Best Choise Deer/Bear Gun Between 25-06 or 308

I am a deer hunter that hunts in some very good bear habitat. This year, buck and bear are legal game the first week of deer season. I would pull the trigger on bear if it was fairly large bear (no small bears).

I am a firm believer in one well placed shoot is the best shot. One benefit of one shot is there is no need for any tracking.

I shoot a "very accurate" 25-06 with handloads (100 g sierra with 55 g of 4831 powder). The deer or coyotes drop and there has been no need to track the game. I have shot deer where there is no exit hole from the bullet.

I have a 308 that I used prior to getting the 25-06. I did very well on shooting deer with the 308.

What caliber and weight bullet should I use to use this year for shooting deer and possibly a bear?

The .308 with 150 grain handloads would be my medicine for either critter due to the heavier bullet weight and .30 caliber round.

Good luck!

With a good bullet(Barnes, accubond, partition), either will be sufficient. Pick which one you like the best, get it shooting good, and don't look back.

I think I'm an alright guy, I think I'm alright

My 2 "deer rifles" i load with mid weight for caliber accubonds...140s in the 280 and 165s in the 308...both eating fairly stiff handloads...not maxed out but not light loads...

My bear rifle is a 35 whelen loaded with 225gr accubonds...but, all 3 of the rifles ride to camp for bear and deer season...if one goes down i grab the other...all 3 are rem pumps and scoped about the same so its all the same besides caliber really....

I like having back ups...1 good fall could bust a scope, stock, bend a barrel...whatever..anything can happen especially when i dog 98% of the time...so i keep em all "loaded for bear" though i have a designated bear rifle...never know when anything will happen and the backup will be needed....

In your case, id load the 308 with a good bullet and carry it...the 25-06 may work...but those bullets are a bit light IMO...shot placement is key like you said...but i rather have a bigger bullet..

this is a hard one for me i love the 25-06 round an with a well placed shot you should be fine! but for sum reason with the bear i would feel more comfortable with the .308..but if your more comfortable shooting with the 25-06 an if it is a good broad side shot then i would go with the 25-06... but i would go with what your most comfortable with

~bake that possum good an brown lay them sweet tader's round an round~

I would use this as an excuse to buy a new rifle !!! But the 308 will work fine with 150 or 165 .

The .308 would work but it may be time to buy a 7 Rem mag!

300 Winmag- Thanks for your thought. However, I have a 7mm and my shoulder doesn't enjoy the 7mm.

If you load some Barnes then the .25/06 should be super. If you choose the .308 get a 165 gr round.
