30-30 for bear.

Anyone use or shot a bear with the old 30-30? Had to sell my 7mm wsm so im down to my cva 30-06 or my marlin 30-30 for this year. We will be doing Drives this year and im not sure which gun I want to carry. Leaning toward the 30-30 for having back up shots if needed. My 06 is only a single shot so on a moving bear it will be hard to get a 2nd shot. If you have taken a bear with a 30-30 what load and what did the bear weigh thanks for any info.

Re: 30-30 for bear.

Many a bear has fallen to a 30-30. Go heavy, 170's and put em where it counts, stay away from square shoulder hits.

Anybody can shoot deer on the farm ground....You earn it in the mountains.......

I would not hesitate for a second to use my 30-30. As with any weapon, shot placement is key.

Re: 30-30 for bear.

I had a friend shoot a 200lb bear at 60 yards with what I believe was a 150 grain Core Lock bullet from a .30-30 about 15 years ago (so memory is a little sketcy on details). Bear went maybe 40 yards. The only note to speak of was it didn't exit. But it did a fine job and I would feel really comfortable with it.

Re: 30-30 for bear.

diesch how far was the shot and were was the hit? Did you get a pass thru. I have three loads I could use 170 win power points, 170 fusions or 170 corelokts.

Re: 30-30 for bear.

several guys in our gang use the 30.30. all but one use factory ammo. the other one shoots a contender and uses 150 spire points. and all have multiple kills. you won't be under gunned. put the shot in them where it counts and game is over

Re: 30-30 for bear.

I carried the .30-30 for bear for years. 170 grain Win. Silvertips. But I killed my only bear with the .32 special and 170 PP's.
