Elk load for .270

Gentelmen,
I was fortunate enough today to get drawn for a cow elk tag!!!!! Woo hoo!!!!!! I handload for my .270. I was thinking of using ( I ordered them this week before I got drawn ) Barnes Triple X 130 grain bullets. Is that too light? I can get 140 and 150 grain Barnes bullets as well. Thank you in advance. Triple B

CONGRATS ON THE TAG!!!! the 270 will be fine although i would lean more towards the 150 grain if it were me. its all about shot placement so make the first one money. what zone did you draw for?

Re: Elk load for .270

Congrats! More than likely any shot on an elk here in Pa will be around 100 yards, so the .270 is fine. My dad has killed a pile of elk in Colorado with his .270. He uses 150 grn Nosler Partitions to get the job done.

Good luck.

My one Buddy killed several with 140 grain Winchester Failsafes. I think that bullet has a new name now, but it was devastating. They may even factory load it, I'm not sure.

I would not be afraid of using the 130 grain Barnes for elk, especially on a cow hunt. They will most likely retain 100% of their weight and will penetrate well - plus they should shoot under MOA.

Load 'em up and put some great tasting meat in the freezer. Best of luck.

Congrats on the draw. I would opt for the 150 also, but if you put that 130 Barnes in the boiler, you should have no problems either.

Re: Elk load for .270

Thank you for the kind words and the helpful input. I really can't believe this has happened to me... literally a dream come true. It's odd because my wife wanted all of us ( 4 kids ) to go see the elk again this year in August. We had a wonderful time. It's funny because I drew for Unit 2 which is not too far from the Elk Visitor's Center. Things are moving fast. I will be ordering the Barnes 150 grain bullets from Cabelas. Take care. Triple B
