Black Bears in Harrisburg

How transient are black bears in PA? All throughout the spring & summer I have received a number of pic of bears on the property I lease just outside of H'burg. With just a three day season for archery and gun, wanted to know how territorial bears are in PA.

Ha! With the PGC trapping and moving them, they are pretty darn transient,

I'm no PGC basher but last year they PO'd me off when they sure did pull a good one. Couple weeks before the season Jerry Feaser(sp?) was on WHP radio telling hunters with access along the south side of Blue Mountain in LP and Susquehanna Twp's to be sure to buy bear tags as there were at least 4 bears hanging around. Then just a few day's before the season they trapped and transferred all of em out of here.

The closer to the seasons it is when you see them and there is good food and plenty of cover in an area the greater the chance is they will be there during the hunting seasons..

What causes them to be more active those specific weeks (breeding, pre-winter rush for food, etc)??? Done a lot of deer research but none on bear.

Re: Black Bears in Harrisburg

No different than deer, fall is time to pack on the calories for all critters.

To go to your original question:

Unlike deer, bears can have a huge home range, so they could be in Linglestown today and in Lykins tomorrow, but if they have lots of food and good cover they’ll hang around an area for a while.
If you’re trying to decide whether to buy a tag, you may as well, a bear-less day in the woods is better than being at work anytime. And you might just get lucky. The neighbors gang killed one back here (Linglestown area) a few years ago.
