Canadian Black Bear Hunt

Heading to Canada next spring for my first black bear hunt. I can't wait and the excitement has almost made me forget about my excitement for the upcoming PA archery season. Any way anyone have any tips, gear recommendations, etc. for me. I am archery hunting over bait with a reputable outfitter however tips from guys who have been there are always welcome.

Re: Canadian Black Bear Hunt

invest in a bug tammer suit,if going with gun, ask outfitter how far will bait be set up, from stand , and make sure your gun will shoot dead on at that spot, none of this crazy stuff like 2 inches high at 100, make sure you can cross the border, good luck i been up to new brunswick 10 times over the years its been good to me 7 out of 10 times, talk to your guide ahead of time, he may want you to bring some other stuff with you, that you think you have but over looked , good luck ,

Re: Canadian Black Bear Hunt

Quebec with Blue Walleye Outpost was reccomended to me by some aquantances who have been going for years. The last 4 years they have been 8 for 8 on bears. I talked to the outfitter and he said he has shot many bear with the thermacell but I have heard others say that they wouldn't reccomend them. I am definitley planning on getting a bug tamer suit also as extra protection. 20 foot stands and baits are set at around 18 yards. Any reccomendations on a bug suit?

Re: Canadian Black Bear Hunt

You dont need a bug tamer suit.. Just wear long sleeve pants and jacket, have a thermacell and a bug headnet ($5 at gander mountain) to use while your thermacell is heating up. The long sleeves and pants will keep the bugs off your body..no need for a special suit. I went to New Brunswick this past spring and bugs were EVERYWHERE and I didnt have any special bug specific gear. Once the Thermacell is warmed up, remove your headnet and hunt.

The guide told me the week prior to when I arrived it was almost 90 the one day and the one guy hunted without a shirt on and had the thermacell on in the stand. He even took his picture "Shirtless" with the bear he shot that evening as a "testament" to how well the Thermacell worked. It worked well for everyone in camp the week I was there also. When I went to track my bear, I turned my thermacell off before climbing down....DUMB mistake! LOL

I often wonder,Why do people get mad, when you tell them the truth?

Re: Canadian Black Bear Hunt

What live2bowhunt stated. I was also in NB this spring. No suit, just Thermacell. No matter what anyone says, thermacell does not bother the bears at all.

Camp life,it don't get much better!
