Bear in forest county?

Hi all ! I have a camp over by cook forest. I have hunted up here for a few years and never seen a bear. It has always been a dream of mine to harvest a PA bear. I have had opportunities to hunt bear in Maine and Canada but it doesn't hold the same appeal to me as PA bear hunting. Anyone got any advice on where and how to harvest a bear in PA. Preferably around cook forest/marienville area.

Re: Bear in forest county?

My dream as well Boonie! I know I will get one some day. Been close a couple times. There are more successful bear hunters on here than I...obviously but I try to set up where I can see down in the thickest stuff I can find. I used to set up where I could see a good ways because I just liked to see other critters and hoped to see a bear. With scouting and time in the woods I have learned some escape routes and travel corridors none of which are open terrain. One is about 100 yards wide though and from up high you can see all the way through it. After the first day we get together and push em. And as the saying goes if you aint walkin on top of the thicket its probably not thick enough. After tracking one one time a couple years ago I believe it. Do some scouting and find out where they are feeding at. It will increase your chances. Keep in mind that when the food is gone they will move on. Good luck this year!

I'd try the area around Salmon Creek.

Re: Bear in forest county?

I went down to game land 24 and it looked good but I decided to stay around my camp and I heard there were 33 bear taken there. I am not sure if it is an exaggeration or the truth. I heard the only way to get a bear is with a big group and drive the woods.

Re: Bear in forest county?

I used to hunt SGL 72 by the gun range, we took 1 out of there a few years ago, not a bad place to hunt. Hunt down towards Toby Creek. My buddy has a camp near Cooks Forest, he said that they have been seeing 5 different bear on there cameras this summer.
