An Old Forge NY business owner thought he may have had a break-in last week. Larry Starer of the Candy Cottage said that the intruder came back, but it was a black bear. Mr. Starer stated that the bear may have been attracted to the candy and a mini doughnut making machine. Extensive damage was reported to a portion of the siding and window on the side of the building. It is believed that the drought conditions in the woods have forced animals to come into town looking for food. The State has put up a flashing sign entering Old Forge that says not to feed bear or deer, but many visitors to the area feed them to bring them in closer so they can get a better look. Mr. Starer added that once he repairs the damage to his store, he will run an electrified wire around the building when he closes at night, which he hopes will prevent further bear break-ins.
It will if it is properly constructed. Electric fences constructed with barbed wire and a piece of bacon over a barb here and there was the best and most effective non-lethal bear deterrent I ever saw during my career.
I watched a bear try to remove a piece of bacon from one of the barbs once and I can tell you that bear wanted nothing more to do with the fence once he was finished trying to knock whatever had bit him off the front of his face. He was all too happy to just get away from the area instead of risking that thing hitting him in the mouth again.
