Re: Tagged bear

sounds like a problem bear that got aged,his body weight , and relocated by pgc, this is what they do when a bear gets to close to a area and makes trouble for him self,

Re: Tagged bear

skwirl;

They don't have to be problem bears to have ear tags. The PGC captures bears all summer each year as part of their mark and recapture program.

Once these bears are captured, ear tags and tattoos are put in. A tooth is pulled if they have adult teeth; but not with juveniles because they can tell how old they are from the teeth eruption patterns. Each bear is aged and put in a database.

The purpose of mark/recapture is to determine population densities. The recapture data comes in from the proportion of bears harvested as compared to the numbers with and without tags.

It helps the PGC set bag limits for each bear management unit and determine the number of bears in PA.

Hope that helps.
