Elk reports...

I was at the check station today from about 3:45 to 5:45, and no elk were brought in by hunters during that time. Between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, 13 elk were brought in.

It was kind of a slow day, but my guess is that the guides who are guiding multiple hunters are staying out until everyone is finished. So, I'm guessing first thing in the morning, some will show up.

While I was there, one old cow elk was brought in by the PGC. It was collared, but in very poor condition and very emaciated. It also had a broken leg, but I don't know what caused that.

Re: Elk reports...

I had planned to go up with someone that had a bull tag. The winter storm wrecked havoc around my place so I did not make the trip myself.

Re: Elk reports...

I had some thoughts on that myself. I actually didn't think you could hunt near Winslow or the viewing area. I guess it's a catch 22. They want some Elk thinned out, but if they are all grazing in the viewing area.... I guess the price you pay for having a "viewing area" is that there may be a few less than challenging hunts ???

Re: Elk reports...

If correct I read that the person who took those pics and wrote that story is a deputy wco, I wonder what the commish thinks about one of their own putting out negative publicity, sometimes hunting is easy sometimes it is hard. I wonder what he would have written had the hunter gone in the morning and the elk werent there, and he had to follow them 6 or 8 miles to take his pics.

Re: Elk reports...

The person writing the reports is not anti-hunting but is against hunting in the Winslow Hill viewing areas.

IMO, it isn't much of a "hunt" in those areas but elk numbers do need managed. This is a cost effective method for doing that.

Re: Elk reports...

That kind of hunt would not work for me.

This is who we are. This is what we do.
