Strangest Thing

Just returned from a week of bow hunting in SGL 29. On Monday evening about 5PM, happened to be at the edge of the stream and saw four deer come frantically charging down to the water from the opposite hill side. The wind was in my favor, I was moving slow and didn't think they had spotted me. Couldn't figure out what spooked them. Not tempting good fortune but thinking they would be in range and I could get a shot after they crossed, I hunkered down in the grass on the opposite side, nocked an arrow on my recurve and waited. The deer were going berserk and bouncing around all over the place on the little pennisula of land, surrounded by water where the stream made a U shaped turn. I then see a bear emerge from the tall grass behind them and stand up for at least five seconds, watching the four of them bouncing around in the tall grass. It then dropped to all fours and charged the closest one, not twenty yards away. Before the bear made it half way to what appeared to be the target, all four leapt almost entirely across the stream, splashing in and with the water being pretty deep in the location, swimming just the last couple of feet and bolting away on the other side. The bear now runs to the water's edge a little downwind of where they crossed and looked ready to swim across and follow. Unfortunately, I am kneeling on the opposite bank and directly across, where it spots me with a locked on "eye to eye" gaze and thirty feet of water separating us. After a couple moments of decision, the bear turned and ambled off. I've spent a lot of time in the woods over the years and have seen a few bears in my time, this made my day. Maybe the circumstances meant something else, but it sure looked like this guy was hunting full grown deer.

Re: Strangest Thing

A bear rarely catches a healthy full grown deer because deer zigzag when they run and a bear can only run full speed in one direction...
