luck calling bears?

i tried a little last year on a rabbit squealer, with no luck in bear country. based on what i have been reading, i didnt call enough--appears you should call a half an hour or until you are totally out of breath, whichever comes first. any other experience?

hunt 2C, 3A, 4A, and others.

Re: luck calling bears?

I called one right in to my deck a year ago with a kettle creek backstabber call! I have to admit, I saw him ahead of time, but only took 20 seconds of calling to turn him and bring him in QUICK. I've never tried it while out in the mountains hunting them.......this might be the year I do

Re: luck calling bears?

I've called several in over the years with hand calls. Once in Warren County I called 4 in within about 20 min. all adult bears and 3 in view at the same time. Each one came from a differant direction. I was calling a large opening in laurel with a lot of acorns on the ground that year. I think you have to be pretty close to them to get a good responce.

Is it legal to call during bear season for bear?
I know they will come into a distress call while predator hunting

Re: luck calling bears?

Like the OP asked, did you call for 20 min or so straight? I also read that your suppossed to call non stop for a considerable length of time.

Re: luck calling bears?

Thanks folks for discussing this! I did searches and couldn't find it, but figured it was me. I plan on trying this this year too.

Re: luck calling bears?

10 years ago I got Wayne Carlton's video and took a mouth call out. I probably didn't call enough nor got in the right neigborhood. What I did get was stares in the parking lot. Now that there's archery bear without an orange hat every 112 yards, I make take it out of the box and try it with bow and treestand.

Forget about the danger; think of the fun!

Re: luck calling bears?

Worst case scenerio is that you might call a coyote in too!
Had that happen to me the last day of bear season last year. Called for a half hour straight right at last light and he came in.

Re: luck calling bears?

Pbro1 I have had them come in quick most of the time 3 to 5 min. I would guess that the longest was 30 min. but I don't stay on stand to long so Iguess it could be longer if I would stay. The time I had 4 in the first one was there in about two. I think they respond better if they are close to you when you start calling.
