PA cow elk hunt 2011

Hi, my father got selected for a cow elk tag last month and starts his hunt next week (Monday Oct.31). I was curious if there is anyone out there that has been selected in the past and has not used a guide? He is hunting in the area just south of Route 555 around Benezette. Since we have a camp in the area, he didn't need lodging and felt as if the guide only rates were more than he wanted to spend.
We were told that cows are harder to find and that it will be tough without a guide. Looking for people with past experience or know someone and are willing to share their success or failure to bag an elk after being selected in the lottery.
Thanks. Dan

Re: PA cow elk hunt 2011

i'm going to assume he drew zone 8, but regardless of that we have drawn 3 tags and never used a guide, that being said, we also spend 7 weekends in a row at my camp before the season started, scouting. my suggestion to you, after waiting until the last minute to ask, is to look at the harvest map on the pgc website and see where they have harvested elk the past 3 or 4 years and start looking in those area's. good luck.

He has drawn zone 8 and yes, he has done some scouting but I figured I would come on the board and see if anyone had additional ideas/suggestions. I am doing this on my own while he is far less nervous about a successful hunt than I am for him. He has studied the harvest map and did most of his scouting around those areas. It is quite a cluster of kills. elkdogg1, would you say that your 7 weekends of scouting was what made your hunts successful or do you feel confident that you would have been successful with a couple weekends prior? Just curious. Anyway, thanks for the feedback and encouragement.

I'll be up there hunting cows too, zone 2, no guide.
Though I've been hunting this area for 13 years for bear and buck.
I've talked to several people and heard same about cows being harder to get ,gotta find the food.

Re: PA cow elk hunt 2011

my family has had a camp in the benezette area for over 60 years. i know the area. we did not hunt the 555 corridor and two of the elk taken was before the 150 yard rule. we just didn't feel it was right to hunt the corridor, just our view. my elk was taken between west hicks and deadend at dents. we took 2 from zone 3, mine from zone 2. zone 3 was no piece of cake. the 2 weekends before the hunt are critical as they will move. i just enjoy being at camp, so any weekend in elk county is better than home. elk or no elk. good luck to you and all hunters.

you should have no problem harvesting a cow in zone 2. pick out a big one, even if it has a collar, harvest the biggest cow you can find. good luck.

finding some of these elk is no walk in the park. you have good reason to be nervous for your friend. my camp is in zone 2 and i had 26 elk we were filming the night before the hunt. i'm figuring piece of cake. Monday morning, no elk, no where. it took me until Thursday to find these elk and harvest one. the other 2 we were lucky enough to harvest the first morning.

one more item. you say he is hunting just south of benezette. i wouldn't leave out scouting the hoover road, gilmore trail area and wykoff. i realize it is late for this info, but a backup plan is always a good thing. you may run into other hunters as we did on one hunt and ended up with a coin flip to see who shots first. don't forget the 150 yard law along 555. again, good luck
