Will bear keep deer out of an area?

I have been getting more bear on the trail cameras, and less and less deer over the past few weeks. Will the bear keep deer, or mature bucks out of my area? Or do the buck not even bother with the bear?

From what we see on our trail cameras is similar to what you are seeing. Buck especially follow the rule of staying away when the bear has been in the area. During the summer months when deer traffic is easy to pattern with mineral blocks, we hardly ever see buck and bear at the block the same day. Does and fawns are not bothered as much as the buck seem to be.

A rutting buck will not be bothered by the bear, however in my experience the doe will be extremely wary/skittish. I have the same problem in my area. I lost a chance at a mature buck that was with a doe last year. She was slowly making her way to me with the buck right behind her when big old blackie walked under my tree. She exploded out of there like a rocket.

Its actually becoming a little frustrating. I have 4 cameras out right now, in places that I want to deer hunt. 3 out of the 4 are getting knocked sideways or twisted by bear within hrs of being reset. I'm really amazed at the amount of bear pics and concerned about the lack of buck I have been seeing.

If you are seeing the same bear more often than once a week something is drawing them to that area (feed/bait) Bear typically have a route that takes them 5-7 days to complete. At least that was what I was told 45 years ago by a Game Protector (I know they are WCO's now)

We have an abundance of Hickory nuts in the area, and thats the only thing that I thought could be attracting them. I have pics of what I think is the same bear, every day for 2 weeks straight on one camera, and pictures of another one for at least a 5 days in a row, then gone for 2 or 3 days then back again for another 4-5.

I'm planning on doing some serious bear hunting this yr.

Had my cam out with food and when the bears got it the deer left. Last week had a bear come by and 10 mins later 9 deer came by. Go figure

Re: Will bear keep deer out of an area?

I had 3 bears come thru while archery hunting yesterday that I got on video....2 hrs later 5 does came sneaking thru the thick stuff on full alert at 11:00.

I know this spot like the back of my hand, and in 15 yrs of hunting it I've never seen a bear, track, scat, nothing.... what was strange is the atmosphere felt off in that spot all day, long before the bears showed. Hard to explain the feeling but the deer weren't coming thru as they should, then at 9am 3 bears stroll thru. 2 hrs after they left a few deer came thru but they seemed really on edge and the bears had been long gone in the other direction from which these deer came.

Was interesting....call it some kinda "hunter intution" or whatever but w/ the bears coming thru there things just seemed off in tense in the area, kinda like a ghost land feeling. Hopefully I won't see them in there again but we'll find out, was 1st time I sat there this season. It's my favorite place to hunt so if the bears become a problem I may need to encourage them to move elsewhere come bear season.

I live to hunt....and hunt to live!

The bear are coming in and cleaning up the apples and corn before the deer have a chance to get any. When a bear shows up at your bait pile, there will be no scraps left behind for the deer.
