Well i will try to make this quick but when i tell stories its sometimes drags out.
Anyway my place of work has a 350 acre peice of public property. It has hiking trails, a pond, a some nice hunting area. Part of my job is to oversee the property when i have time whice hasnt been much lately. I had to meet a guy on the lower part of the property where we have a barn in the morning. I sold him some tree tubes and sent him on his way. After meeting with him i thought i would drive up the road where we have a pavilion and parking area to see if there waqs litter to pick up. For once there wasnt a bunch of trash so i opened the gate to our access road and did a drive around of the roads on the property. My final stop was at the top of the property where there is an old pine plantation bordered by a area that is managed for grouse and woodcock mostly. Its real thick with brush, blackberries, and other low growing stuff. There is a trail that runs between the 2 areas that i had not been on in probably 8 months or more. I thought i better walk it to check for tress and such. It had been raining so the ground was quiet as i walked the trail. I get maybe 150 yards from the truck and the brush beside me starts to russle. Thinking it was a grouse i waited for it to fly out but the russling turned into crashing and as i looked closer it was a bear cub 6-8 feet away busting out of the brush. At first i stood there and watched it for maybe a few seconds before my brain caught up and said where is momma? Right then i hear a woooof and jaws popping. I see momma bear about 25 yards away and she is partially standing up looking my way woofing repeatedly. I thought at first run but my brain took over and said to hold my ground and start backing away slowly. About then she drops to all fours and turns on the afterburners headed straight for me. I thought at first she was bluffing and would stop after a few steps but she didnt. I looked around for a tree to climb and my only option was an aspen that was pretty small in diameter but it had branches that were perfectly spaced for my fat butt to get up it pretty fast. That was my last resort since i know bears can climb alot better than me. Anyway i stood my ground and shouted and waved my arms at the sow. I really didnt think she was going to stop so my brain was going a mile a second. Right about the time i started to reach for the first branch on the tree she came to a screeching halt and ran away as fast as she came. When she left another cub not 10 feet away from me followed her as they went down over the hill. That little cub that was in some brush almost got me eaten by momma, i was so focused on mom that i neve4r saw this other cub within spitting distance. I took a moment to collect my thoughts and check my drawers before looking to see just how close she got. When she turned away she kicked up some leaves and dirt that was 15' away from where i was standing. Im 28 and have been in the woods since i was a youngin, but i have never experienced anything that scared me like that. I bear hunted in canada and walked out of the woods in the dark on edge but this was an experience. I called my dad since it was his birthday to tell him the story. About 5 years ago he had one charge him to 7' while spring gobbler hunting, im not sure how he kept from pulling the trigger on his 10 gauge. He said about the time he was starting to think about shooting she turned around and left. So be careful out there folks.
Common sense isn't very common these days!
