Bear calibers

Not to rehash a subject already beaten to death but just returned from a vacation in Maine. While there I asked a bear guide what caliber he prefers his clients to use. His reply was a .308, .270, 30/06 etc. He also said his brother used a .243 since their bears were so small. Guess you can use whatever.

Re: Bear calibers

For a bear at 15 yards I think I'd prefer a 12 gauge slug.

Re: Bear calibers

I might also mention they do kill 300-400 pound bears in Maine. I'm not sure how small that is.

Re: Bear calibers

sure they "do" but not as regularly as here, not nearly. 400 pounders are monsters up there

Better bear come out of Maine than you think.

And 400 pounders aren't nearly as common here as you think. Go to a check staion sometime and see what size bear come in for the most part. The vast majority of bear brought into a PA check station are less than 300 pounds.

Re: Bear calibers

never said there isnt any.... just not as common as here. AND the main factor is shots are very close and usually perfect situation because they have their face in a barrel. so smaller caliber can be used
