Bear Hunting Basics

Is there any good place I can get basic black bear hunting info? I tried google but theres nothing overly helpful that I could find easily. Im new to PA and Im from south jersey where there are no bears. I believe that the area I am hunting holds a few bears, I havent seen them but I did find 2 good size piles of droppings the last time I was scouting.

Does you call bears? Use scents? Wait for one to walk by?

I havent decided if I am even going to try it yet, but if I think its something I could handle then I'd like to give it a shot

Any info you guys could provide is greatly appreciated, thanks

Solo bear hunting is difficult BUT can be done successfully BUT not without a great deal of scouting!!
Most PA bear hunts involve a group of hunters driving the nastiest swamps and thickets around hoping to push a bear to the standers or having a driver get a glimpse of one.
Over the years Bear hunting has become my favorite season NEXT TO Blackpowder season!!
Good luck

Re: Bear Hunting Basics

find food, find bears, simple as that.

Last year on a ridge with more acorns than i ever saw in my life i saw bears 3 out of 5 days i sat there. Then sat at some corn fields during archery bear season and saw a bear every night and so did my 2 buddies. (my buddies didnt see the same bears, we were in different areas)

Re: Bear Hunting Basics

we have hunted "solo" so to speak for a few seasons now. It is more productive with a drive gang, but just find the thickest cover in your area, and look for more sign, and give it a shot.

Pray for snow!!! Then prepare to put some miles on! As stated find the thick cover close to food.

Re: Bear Hunting Basics

Do some scouting, look for a food source, tracks, scat, etc. The one I harvested was chowing down on acorns. If you are sitting in the hardwoods and can see a hundred yards around you, you are most likely not in the "Bear" woods. Get into the swamps and thick laurel where a thought like "this is insane" might go through your head then you are close. Pa. bear hunting can get up close and personal. I think Pa. bear hunting is the best it's ever been recently, good luck.

I love solo hunting the snow myself... thats when you lace the boots up, bring your water purifier and hustle.

Re: Bear Hunting Basics

I'm trying to learn also. I've been enjoying the book "Black Bear Hunting" by Richard P. Smith. I think I bought it from Amazon. Less than a month to see if I learned anything.

I support the right to arm bears.
