bullets/gun for pa elk

ok now that i'm searching this online for the upcoming elk season, what guns.bullets are a solid pick for pa elk. i know out west longer shots are normal and premium bullets a must but my choices are a 30-06 borrowed from family member or my lever action .35 remington. Another friend offered a biggers gun used for out west but i'd rather use a family gun. shoulk i consider the premium bullets to retain bullet penetration even in pa? would a 35 be sufficient for an elk? thanks folks

Re: bullets/gun for pa elk

your 06 will be fine I'd look for 180grain bullets but you'll proably be fine with 150 grainers as well. As for the .35 I would guess your shots will be within its range and hornady makes the leverevolution bullet which may increase your distance a little further then some of the other factory brands

Re: bullets/gun for pa elk

Nosler Accubonds a good elk bullet I believe winchester loads has it loaded in some factory ammo not sure what the box is called though. And if you do carry the 35 I'd def look into LeveRevloution from hornady I think It would pretty cool to use the 35. I'd try to keep shots under 150 yds with the .35 though its a big fat bullet but loses its speed/power pretty quick with the 06 you'll be set. I believe I saw you had a cow tag cows are smaller then bulls so you should be fine power wise. I once read a story by wayne van zwoll (spelling) and he killed an elk with a 30-30 before if he did that I'm sure you can with a .35 which is a basically a beefed up 30-30. good luck with this hunt.

http://www.hornady.com/store/35-Rem-...EVERevolution/

The ballistic on this actually looks like you'll be good out to 200 yds and a little past

Re: bullets/gun for pa elk

thanks west.. i'd love to use the 35 just cause its mine. is there any concern over the expanding bullet vs one that is designed for penetration? with the lever and a 100 yard shot i should be able to pound a few in fast so i guess it should be good. thanks

Re: bullets/gun for pa elk

I think either bullet would do the job. I would use what I am used to shooting and can shoot the best. If you shoot deer with the .35 and aren't really comfortable or don't shoot a .30-06 that much, the stay with the .35.

All too often guys think that they need a new gun to go out west and hunt and they end up getting a gun they aren't comfortable with and it comes back to bite them.

Put the .35 in the boiler room and get the tag ready.

Good luck with your hunt!!!

I think you will be fine with whatever you choose. I shot my cow with a 50 cal inline at 78 yards and dropped her in her tracks.
