Big momma bear with cubs

I might go bear hunting for the first time this year. Probably Saturday opener only though.

Would you take a big momma bear with cub(s) still running with her?

Re: Big momma bear with cubs

Depends if she was with last years cubs that were over 100 lbs or this years cubs being less then 40.

Either way it is legal and a trophy in somes eyes but personally I would pass.
Good Luck with your season

Re: Big momma bear with cubs

I'VE ALWAYS ASKED MYSELF THAT QUESTION WHEN OUT IN THE WOODS BEAR HUNTING, GUESS IT WOULD BE A SPLIT SECOND DECISION ON MY PART. I'VE HEARD RUMORS THAT CUBS WILL NOT SURVIVE IF THE MOTHER GETS KILLED? IF THAT IS TRUE THEN THAT I WOULD NEVER SHOOT A SOW WITH CUBS!

Re: Big momma bear with cubs

I've also hear that the cubs hang around bawling after the mother was shot. Not saying I wouldn't shoot but that would bother me. We actually heard two cubs running around last year bawling. I assume mom got killed.

Now if you would ask my son he is definitely shooting. I just told him don't expect me to shoot one of the cubs if they hang around. His choice and I don't begrudge him or anyone else that shoots a mom with cubs or anyone that shoots a cub for that matter I just don't like when people shoot cubs that won't leave the mother it just doesn't seem right to me. Just my opinion though.

Re: Big momma bear with cubs

I agree with birch 812 , depends on size of cubs.Though you may not even notice cubs with her, being a split second decision sometimes. I have been on a hill where mom got shot in the morning and cubs hung around all day balling, till eventually the party that shot mom ,drove em out and got them. That affected my decision on sows with small cubs ,it's a tough one though.
