Ice or Dry Ice?

Ok I am heading out to Wyoming in two weeks on an elk hunt. Now I have gotten elk before and after boneing the meat I like to pack it my coolers in regular ice. The other half of my hunting party likes dry ice, but the reason I dont like it is it freezes some of or most of the meat. I like to let my meat cool for ai least a week or two that is why I pack it in regular ice then when I get back home I hang it in my cooler for a while then freeze it. What do you seasoned veterans reccomend? thanks for any feedback!

Not a seasoned vet here, but to make things easy on the both of you, I'd recommend two separate coolers. ; )

Re: Ice or Dry Ice?

i would think the dry ice would be to close to the meat like that and may burn it.

i think i would use ice as long as the meat stayed dry.

Con, dry ice is a hazardous material
Pro, reg ice can be bought just about anywhere

Re: Ice or Dry Ice?

If your flying, I'd go with dry ice. Otherwise, regular ice.

Re: Ice or Dry Ice?

I do not think they let dry ice on a plane anymore, I could be wrong, but I think its Hazmat now because of the gas it gives off. Interested to see if anyone knows for sure.

Re: Ice or Dry Ice?

Just drove back from New Mexico last Thursday and Friday. Had 3 bulls in the meat box in the back of the truck. 30 lbs of dry ice did well. Meat was still cold when got home.
I will second the no dry ice on the planes.
