Just so you all know, it doesn't hurt your odds to pick a zone preference on the elk application. Preference only comes into play after you have been drawn, so you're better off doing some research and putting in for a zone that you want to hunt or has been known for large bulls. Even if your preferred zone is sold out they don't skip over you or anything, you still get a tag for another zone.

My opinion counts as much as everyone else's and my opinion PGC got this one right. Kudos. I applied for an elk tag for the first time. Good for them starting an archery season. I don't think any draws should have point systems. They should all be 100% random. But living within the bonus point game they did the right thing.

Went to buy my license and was thinking of applying for elk. I haven't for several years. The info was confusing, but this thread cleared that up. I have no feeling about the changes either way with such low odds of drawing anyway. Yes you have to be in it to win it, but think I'm going to pass again this year. Would really like to take one out west anyway even though an elk hunt out there is unlikely.

Davy If hunting the west is something you want to do, then jump on it. A person has to start somewhere. 100's upon 100's of thousands of acres open to hunt. No guide needed, pick a spot and go camping. I have been going since 1983, when my father took me, every year it is something new chasing western elk. And it can be done for a lot sell $$ than you would think.

Thanks for the encouragement Fullfan. Actually my BIL lives in CO and goes DIY camping on public ground.. Problem is I'm too old to be carrying one out on my back up and down those mountains.
