11/21 Last day

Headed out for one last frigid treestand sit. 29 degrees in my neck of the woods. Looks like the kill's down this year. Only 2200 checked thus far. Good luck to those headed out on this last day.

No bear for me this year. Congratulations to those who connected. It doesn't look like the rifle hunters will even break the 2000 threshold. Overall they'll probably fall short of 2300. Hmm. That's kind of surprising with the amount of snow covering PA the 1st two days.

The snow made for good tracking but also made some state forest road impassible and hard to trudge through.

Our crew got another bear today.
We had a pretty good season this year.

Part #1 of bear season is over, however in 3D, we still have next week.

Went out this morning with 6 other guys. We put on several drives, but kicked out no bears. We did see some fresh tracks, but they just didn't seem to want to cooperate.

Kicked out two coyotes, but no one connected.

Oh well, time to rest up for next week.

I was out today for a short period of time. I had my gear with me so I guess you could say I was "hunting", but I was mainly going to check on my stand set ups for the rifle opener. After I was done, I drove down through a tract of state forest that usually holds some bears and I felt would have a decent turn out for bear season. I did not see one other car parked or driving the whole way through the state forest. I was surprised not one guy was out on the last day in that area. I have a feeling that the rifle harvest is down significantly in part due to the expansions to the extended season. I know this is the first year there has been an extended season in my WMU and I'm guessing this is why there was no one out on the state forest today. It is likely that guys are saving their vacation days up for the extended bear season that is concurrent with deer rifle. This way that can hunt both and maximize their time. I look for the harvest numbers to jump back up in the extended season.

My son is hunting behind our house and saw 2 bears within easy shooting distance and decided to pass. He said they were last years cubs and wanted let them go. We had 3 much larger bears on camera.

I got out for a couple hours before having to deal with an issue at my tenants, then got out for a couple more hours afterward. I found two very fresh sets of tracks but didn't have enough time to get caught up with either set. One was a nice size bear.

I also got checked by a warden. That hasn't happened in 20 years. I didn't have my drivers license on me and he sent me back home to get it(about 10 minutes round trip). Nice enough guy, we had a chat about nuisance bears and where he rehomes them.
