Exclamation Man Charged with Illegally Killing Black Bear

POCONO TOWNSHIP, Pa. ó The Pennsylvania Game Commission has charged a man with killing a black bear the day after archery bear season ended.

Authorities say Robert Vanehy, 69, of Stroudsburg, admitted killing the 400-pound bear last week behind a home near Tannersville.

Vanehy is charged with a misdemeanor, which carries a fine of up to $3,000.

The Game Commission is also seeking a replacement cost of $1,500 for the bear.

Glad he was apprehended. Thought amount related to replacement cost of resource would be much greater!!

Was the last day of archery bear a Saturday? They could pop him for hunting on Sunday as well.

Probably a lot more to the story. He shot the bear behind a home. I wonder if it was visiting a feeder? Could have a baiting and safety zone issue too.

If the district judge charges the $1500 replacement cost does the PGC actually buy a black bear from some place and release it, or does that $1500 just go to whatever the PGC wastes money on?

EDIT: I know that reads a little (or a lot) condescending of the PGC; I make no attempt to hide my dislike for the agency; however I am curious if itís a true replacement of the animal illegally harvested or if itís just another way to increase fines.
