PA Elk herd

what keeps the Elk in the middle of the State ? why dont they expand their range ?


did the PGC install invisible fencing

They are slowly expanding. I would hate to see the conflict with farmers in the original elk areas that now has pretty much passed move into other counties and kick up again. At one time between brain worm and farmers killing them, there was a lot of questions about success with the reintroduction of elk in PA.

I was at the Elk Expo this year and the biologist mentioned something about possibly expanding the range further to the east. Someone asked "why not the ANF?" and he said that wasn't in their plans for a variety of reasons.

Yes and it causes stress and has caused reproductive rates to drop.

Actually this is an article from last year that the PGC does have concern about the limited gene pool.

Why not, illegal invaders crossing out southern borders are bringing in diseases that we had eradicated. The source of any elk imported to help the gene pool is important.
