Pepper Spray?

When hunting for bear do you carry Pepper Spray? When you are in the woods scouting do you carry Pepper Spray? Would it be effective or not against bears should you get caugth off your gaurd? Personally I never have carried it. Has anyone?

Re: Pepper Spray?

I have pepper spray but only carried it when archery hunting and would not want to have to shoot/kill a bear I did not want to kill. I have more faith in a gun to stop a bear attack than I do in pepper spray. STILL, it is better than bare hands in the event of a confrontation. There was just a fatal bear attack in Yellowstonr NP involving a man from my very small town here in Michigan. Reports are that he WAS NOT carrying pepper spray dispite being advised to by park rangers! Who knows - if he had had pepper spray, he might not have been killed.

Re: Pepper Spray?

Bear spray is very effective, on both bears and people.

The other week someone stupid decided they needed to use their bear spray on a mouse in their room at the Old Faithful Inn at Y-stone. The Inn had to evacuate multiple rooms in the spray area.

Re: Pepper Spray?

Used to carry the magnum cans (the size of a can of wasp/hornet spray)of pepper spray on our wilderness Canadian fishing trips. Then we found out how easy it really is to just declare a 12 gauge pump and 20 rounds of buckshot & slugs at customs.

Pepper spray ??? We don't need no steenking pepper spray.

Re: Pepper Spray?

Pepper spray is the DEVIL in liquid form

Bears have VERY sensitive noses ... without having ever deployed pepper on a bear... I'm thinking it would be a pretty determined bear to stick around after a face full of liquid devil!! I'm thinking it would be effective way more often than not.

Re: Pepper Spray?

Viewing youtube video's I saw guys using Pepper Spray. It was my understanding that Pepper Spray does NOT work on animals of all varieties. From these video's it does work on bears? Wouldn't hurt to carry. We carry enough gear as it is; do we really need it? I do carry a 45 cal. side arm as extra pre-caution when I am out.
