First season of bear hunting

I've always wanted to try bear hunting but this year I've decided I'm going to do it. I'm planning on archery hunting Mid-Novemeber and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on location.

I often take my kids camping at Hickory Run State park and they are always warning about not leaving food out because it attracts bears so I figured that area may be worth a try.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Find a big, thick, nasty, stinky swamp! Find a tunnel or trail that they are entering and exiting and climb a tree next to it. Then sit all day and wait!

advice...patience and little expectation. You are not only going to take on a very weary opponent, but also during the bow season. You have your hands full but I wish you all the luck in the world and would love nothing more than to see your pic in the success forum come Nov!

Re: First season of bear hunting

For archery

First find where there are bears in the area. Listen to neighbors, friends etc. Then find the (food) standing corn is tough to beat for maybe a chance at seeing a bear during archery.

For rifle same thing and if you can get into a group of friends that put on drives would be your best chance. Go into it with the thought you are probably not going to shoot one right away, but eto enjoy the outdoors, experience and hopefully good companionship of a few freinds?

Re: First season of bear hunting

Thanks for the advice guys. Yes, I'll be more than happy (and a little shocked) to see a bear. I've got many hours experience of not seeing deer so I should be good. Its the chance of it happening that counts eh :-)

Re: First season of bear hunting

Good luck. This fall will be my 40th year Bear hunting in Pa. I was with a gang one time when another member killed one and about 10 years ago I caught a quick glimpse of one but no time for a shot. The odds are VERY low but are ZERO if you don't go. I continue to go. I take my rifle for a walk every year. Who knows this may be my year. It only takes a few seconds to get lucky. My number came up last year with the biggest buck of my life (10 point, 20.5 inch spread, 185 lb. field dressed, 215 est. live weight, he scored 138 1/8 B & C just missing the Pa. record book).I shot him on public land in Clinton County. A MONSTER for a mountain Buck. Again good luck to you.

Re: First season of bear hunting

Try to find bear scat right before the season. Where you find it only builds your confidence in your stand placement. They will be in the nastiest thickest laurel around. The area your taking about is good for bear. If you luck out and get one with a bow in PA, you are on a very short list. Good luck!
