Highlight Hunt of the Week in S.E. Alaska
Michael McEwan's 6.6 x 6.6 black bear, taken Sunday p.m. has to be one of the great moments of our spring season. This old warrior was standing on his moose kill, defending it against two younger bears, somewhat larger, but not nearly as fierce. Other bears were in the area. I didn't get to see the defender standing on the moose, but I saw the other bears stand up all over the clear cut and I smelled the moose and later walked into it, on Monday p.m. (As a transporter, I can't go in the field with the hunter.) Boat based guides can not come up with this kind of experience, as they just cherry pick bears off the beaches. Michael had worked hard, reading sign and locating the spot near the center of the island. This was the apex of a determined hunt by an experienced hunter. Hunter and trophy are in flight on the way home. Michael has promised to send pics pronto, as soon as he gets back to his family in Tennesee.
