Pig Nut trees

Guys have any of you heard of Pig Nut trees? I was at work Friday and I looked out the window of the house I was working on and saw a tree with this little round baby apple looking things on them so I went to pick one and showed a guy I was working with and he said they call them Pig Nuts. I had never heard of this and was wondering if any of you had.

Re: Pig Nut trees

People in my neck of the woods call one of the hickory trees hognut or pignut hickory, I would guess that is what you saw. When the green husk splits open there is a verry hard shelled nut inside. You can eat thembut they are bitter, that is if you can open the shell, you won't do it with your teeth.

Re: Pig Nut trees

Pig nut hickories always start dropping early, especially if you have alot of squirrels around, sound like hail dropping down for a few weeks

Anybody can shoot deer on the farm ground....You earn it in the mountains.......
