ARE THESE CHANTEALS? or chicken or....?

ok i'm really gettin into the shroom hunting and now know i need an id book (i'll get one this weekend) but found these and just woundered if anyone chould tell mewhat they are and how to cut them,cook and/or save them. thanks p.s. found them at the very base of an oak tree

Do you have any pictures of the underside and stem? From what I can see I don't believe they are either chicken of the woods or chanterelless. It looks like I can see some gills around the edge in the top picture. Chicken of the woods doesn't have gills and chanterelle gills are not that defined. It looks like it could be a Jack-o-Lantern, which you DO NOT WANT TO EAT.

Looks like the Jack-O-Lantern and not a Chanterelle, which do not get that big. Jack's grow at the base of living trees, stumps and off the buried roots. Chanterelles grow on the forest floor and have a different gill makeup. And yes Jacks are posionous!

you should have gone on the foray at yellow creek yesterday Dayton Boy13, we had a good walk and found lots .

they look like jack's from what I understand, DO NOT EAT

I don't know where you heard that, but is totally false. Just about all the shrooms sold in our supermarkets have gills, including the common white button mushroom and portabella. And many wild gilled shrooms are choice edibles.

YEAH JSUT AN UPDATE I DEDUCTED THAT THEY WERE JACK O LANTERN AND DID NOT EAT THEM, I DID HOWEVER YESTERDAY FIND HUNDREDS OF CHANTERELLES and ginsing i'll post pics. later.

Curly i've been waiting for one of those next one you know of let me know i have been wanting to go i didnt realize there was one going on over in yellow creek or i would have been there. oh well wisha, coulda, shoulda, woulda.
