skunk cabbage

I see the skunk cabbage is coming up. My 79 year old mother tells me that a person can eat it when it first comes up. How on earth would you ever get by the smell?

Re: skunk cabbage

I've heard of people eating it, but like you said, it has to be right as it's coming up. Once it blooms out, if you eat it, it'll feel like you have millions of needles in your mouth. I don't know from experience, but I know of someone who did eat it too late in the season and said it was the worst thing he'd ever eaten bc of the feeling in his mouth.
