Stag Sumac

New guy question here. I'm trying to positively identify Stag Sumac. I've done the research and found the ones on my property meet all of the general criteria, leaf size, shape, bark, seed clusters, and so on. However, all of my trees have these nodules on them which I can find no info on, anyone? PS: I'm in NE Pa.

Re: Stag Sumac

That is a stag horn sumac. What you call nodules are galls. They are full of aphid colonies.

Re: Stag Sumac

Thank you John, I appreciate your help. The galls are well constructed, they actually look as they are part of the tree. Thanks again.

Re: Stag Sumac

You are welcome. There are several insects that create galls for protection. You will find them on some leaves and the ones I have found useful are the galls on goldenrod stems. The little worm inside each gall is good bait for panfish.
