Wow, lanchester, you were right on it! That looks like it. Being new to growing corn, never seen it before. One concern is that it says the spores that are released can reside in the soil for years.

Do you agree that it looks like 'coons got the good ears? All my good ears are shredded and stripped like the one in the picture.

Re: Strange corn????

Nasty looking stuff!! It has been a rough year for corn at my place also. I tried a *new special hybrid* and to make a long story short I have stalks that are about waist high and cobs about as big as my finger. Really is pathetic looking.

Re: Strange corn????

BTW, I would venture a guess by your name I'm probably not that far from you - pretty close to the county line. No where near Limerick!

I've visibly witnessed squirrels shred corn just how that is shredded. A lot of the coons I've seen eating the corn they pull the stalk down then tear it apart.

Re: Strange corn????

Went out and looked at this again this morning. It is just as the article says, and some of the nodules have already popped - so that means spores! Cut the plant off, bagged it and disposed of it! I don't know if burning it would be better to kill the fungus? Got to check into a fungicide.
