I think I finally found one (see pic)

After quite a bit of research, I'm pretty confident this is a sheepshead. But I would still like confirmation from some seasoned experts.

yes that is a sheepshead. After a while they start to take on a yellowish tint. That means that they are going down hill. In that picture I think that I am starting to see a small amount of yellow on that fungus. I would look at that fungus to make sure that it isn't too old and then I would make sure to remove the yellow sections from it.

Thanks for the confirmation 79. I cleaned and removed the yellow tint. Will be cooking some in the morning.

I got another today too, great find and congrats on your 1st, now you are hooked. I put mine in salt water for at least an hour to supposedly kill the bugs and stuff, I rinse and either cook or freeze at that point.

It may be a poor choice of words but I am smart enough to understand what you meant.

Looks more like a Black Staining Polypore....hard to tell from your picture. Either one is edible.

I washed it and cooked some up. Tastes great! I froze the rest. You're right, I am hooked on searching for more. Weather looks good for growing more shrooms this week.
