Fiddleheads

I have never picked fiddleheads before and I am hoping that this is the year I can give them a try. I will be out picking ramps this weekend and I was thinking about doing some scouting for fiddleheads while I am out. What type of area should I be looking for them in? There are plenty of ferns in the area where I pick ramps but I'm not sure what variety they are. Should I look in wetter areas? Any help would be appreciated.

You want fiddleheads that have a papery outer layer.

Most of the fiddleheads I ever picked where in damp/ wet areas and along river banks. Those ferns you see in the woods like where your ramps are are just regular bracken ferns, you can get sick if you eat them. Look for the young ferns that are about 6" high, they'll be growing in a round clump. They'll be covered with a brownish colored husk, like paper. You want the ones where the head is still tightly curled together and NOT starting to separate or uncurl, they can make you sick. If you're lucky you may find a patch with literally hundreds growing. I found a patch like that growing along the Allegany river in Potter county. Goggle Fiddleheads to get some ideas of what to look for. Good Luck!

Thanks for the replies guys. You confirmed what I thought. I am going to do some walking to try and locate some this weekend. Will post some pics if I find some.
