Mushrooms and other foraging

What's the best way to start out if you don't know anyone who does it? I really want to know more and I figure reading a million books won't substitute the experience with folks that already know what they're doing. Are there clubs or classes to help that I could get into?

I've always been crazy, but it keeps me from going insane.

Joining a mushroom club will give you the hands on information you need. They have meetings, cooking demonstrations and walking forays where you go out with experienced mycolgists to show you what is what. The membership is well worth the 10 or 15 dollars for a years membership. You may contact http://www.epennmushroomers.org

Re: Mushrooms and other foraging

Thanks bearclaw I did see their website. They are about 2 hrs away. A little further than I would probably do just starting out. It looks like non members can join some of the forays though. Any one have Chester/Montgomery County resources?

If you don;t know what you are doing, the two hour drive once in a while is well worth it if you cant find a closer club.
