Fruit / Berry Identification

I've seen these for years around my place and this year appears to be a bumper crop. I've fed these to quail I raised and they loved them.

My question, what are they?

Re: Fruit / Berry Identification

Those are the berries of Oplopanax horridus....... or Devil's Club (Devil's Walking Stick). Believe it or not, it's actually in the ginseng family.

I have also called it a few other choice names when I happened to grab one of the thorny boogers without looking.

Around here, when the berries are looking like that, it's only a matter of days til a bear has the tree broken over and the berries cleaned off.

Wheen devil's club is in blossom, honey bees work it really hard. It produces a bitter, almost in edible honey. It's the only plant I know of in Pa. that yields bad honey.
